Renovation of Clark House by La Shed Architecture

La SHED architecture‘s focus for Clark house was to maximize natural light and create a functional layout offering the residents a unique architectural experience that would facilitate to their lifestyles and change in seasons. The service spaces such as storage, bathroom, and circulation has been organized to the front of the property on the ground floor to for the rest of the programs to have privacy from the street. This barrier of intimacy naturally delineates the vestibule and interrupts the vernacular architecture of the front facade.

The kitchen lies in the double height atrium space juxtaposed to the staircase and facing the back garden. A study area on the mezzanine level overlooks the kitchen, with the whole space basked in natural light from the full height glazing. The kitchen floor, ceiling, and walls of the staircases has been clad in pine wood, adding warmth to the white steel staircase and simultaneously giving it a sense of lightness and delicacy. Suspended on the floor of the mezzanine, the staircase passes the light from the floor to the ground floor and creates impressive light contrasts.   Photography by Maxime Brouillet
